Mary Kate Fitzgerald is a partner at Fitzgerald Law Group, PC, and has focused her practice on property taxation since being admitted to the Illinois Bar in 2011. She limits her representation to the owners and lessees of commercial, industrial, and investment-grade real estate in Cook County and throughout Illinois.

Mary Kate has developed a reputation for being a tenacious advocate on behalf of her clients. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of property taxation, with over 14 of those years as an attorney. Mary Kate has practiced before various Boards of Review throughout Illinois, the State of Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board, and in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Unlike most of her peers, Mary Kate has experience trying documented cases before the State of Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board, having successfully litigated numerous contested cases through days-long hearings.

Mary Kate represents an array of clients including  business owners, real estate developers, financial institutions, and owners and users of complex properties including ice arenas and data centers. In every case, she begins her representation with a site visit, tailors the methodology to be employed to suit the specific needs of the client, and maintains consistent communication with her clients throughout every step of the process. The status of the property and methodology to be employed is revisited at every step of the appeal process to ensure that every issue is addressed.

Having been trained by the Jesuits from high school through law school, education has been of utmost importance to her in improving the property tax system. Mary Kate was a founding board member of the Women’s Property Tax Association where she served as President from 2020 to 2022, and has served as Ex-Officio President from 2023 to present. The Women’s Property Tax Association is dedicated to furthering educational and career advancement opportunities for its members. Mary Kate is the founding President of the Coalition for Sustainable Taxation, a not-for profit  organization dedicated to monitoring proposed  legislation to ensure that fairness and sustainability are at the crux of the tax system in Illinois.

Mary Kate is recognized by her peers as a Leading Lawyer. Additionally, Mary Kate is an active member of the Realty Club of Chicago, the IPAI Legal Symposium Planning Committee, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
